Early to Mid September 2011

In this post are photos I have taken of the site as building work progresses in September.

I noticed the store like this the night before when I didn't have a camera with me, so I decided to get this photo from my iphone camera. The interior is lit up green, rather fitting considering it will be an eco store. This is a view of the south side with the workmen working off to the left on the west side of the store.

The image above is a 5 photo iphone panorama of the Underfleet car park and the store as the daylight fades.

Another photo of the store with the workmen working away on the left under one of the floodlights. The fading light in the west is reflecting off of the glass panels on the store, this shows how many panels are left to put in on this side.

The photo above was taken using my iphone early in the evening as workmen were working at the side of the store. The fence along this side of the store has been completely taken down now, allowing you to see the length from the car park. You can see some lights on in the store through the windows above and to the right.

------------------------------------

This photo of the west of the store is a stitched 25 image panorama that I took using my iphone.

Here is a view from beside the tramway station, where you can see the south side of the store in the background and the youth centre building on the right.

Here is a view of the south western edge of the store with the overhanging south canopy in view as well. The glass panels you can see have been installed here with only a few panels left to be installed on this side of the store. Work will then progress on the front after both sides are complete.

Above is a photo of two workmen on the western side of the store about to lift a glass panel so that it can be fixed into place from one of the cherry picker machines alongside.

One of the workmen in a cherry picker working on the roof structure of the youth centre building, exposing the roof beams and the first floor to the elements.

Above is one of the photos I took through the fence, looking at the front window of the youth centre with some rubble below it and an aerial hanging off of the side of the roof.

This is a photo taken at the Harbour road roundabout, where the fenced off area around the youth centre looks like it will be getting blue Tesco fencing installed around it for the next couple of months in order to build the new pedestrian area here.

Here is another regular spot view, of the car park, where more streetlights have been installed in islands that will form part the car park.

Here is a view west along the landscaped area looking towards the youth centre, which is currently being taken apart, roof first. There is also someone on a roller, compacting the hardcore layer of the pedestrian realm.

Here is a view looking inside the store with work installing overhead pipes underway. Once the store is complete, these overhead pipes, and the timber roof frame will still be visible to all, making the interior feel very spacious and open.

Above is another view of the south eastern corner of the store, with the car park area off to the right. The area in the foreground is beginning to be landscaped, with the pedestrian area in the middle of the store and the foreground area.

Above is a view of the south east side of the store, where the entrance area will be located. Glass panels have been installed on the left, with a lot of asphalt already down on the car park which is off to the right.

The photo above is taken of the south side of the store. This is one of my regular viewpoints, that enable me to document the progress over the months very well.

Above is a photo that I changed to black and white, of workmen carrying materials across the roof.

Above is a shot looking at the front (south) of the store with an area ready for landscaping in the foreground.

Here is a view looking west along Harbour road, which is littered with road works, with fences on each side the same colour, blue on one and orange on the other.

Above is a photo looking down on the town and the roof of the Tesco store from the cliffs above Seaton Hole.

----------------------------------------------

Above is a panorama of the store with a digger sitting on the tramway, while digging a trench along this side of the store, so that a permanent fence can be put in place. Fence posts have started to be placed closer to the tramway station, that are not as high as the Tesco fencing that is up around the site.

Above is an iphone photo of the west side of the store, where guys are working into the night digging up the weedy bank that used to sit behind the blue fencing.

Above is a quick comparison looking down to the west of the store today 12th September and February 2011. The bottom photo was taken on my phone using digital zoom, hence the grain. You can see though the transformation of this area alone is big, considering it has only 7 months difference.

Above is another comparison looking south along the west side of the store as is now, with the site above as it was in February 2011.

Another comparison photo here, this being of the back of the store. Top taken early August 2011 and the bottom taken 12th September 2011.

The image above is a quick comparison from the same spot. The top image was taken February 2011 and the bottom taken today 12th September 2011. What you see in the bottom photo is the tramway line in the foreground and the south west corner of the Tesco store in the background.

-------------------------------------

Another photo above showing the front of the youth centre building, where the double entrance doors are, now sitting behind the fence.

Above is a small panoramic image shot from the tramway side of the fenced off area, with just access in the fence for works traffic.

The whole area around the youth centre building has been fenced off, to allow for the removal of asbestos, demolition and creation of the new public area, linking the town to the store.

The photo above was taken using one of my compact digital cameras looking past the tramway lines towards the youth centre building, that now has the Tesco fence erected around it.

--------------------------------------

Here is a view of the store and the Car park which you can see has been partially laid with tarmac. The side walls are almost complete with glass panels in the spaces left to do. The roof is also covered now with spaces for the store skylights ready.

The photo above is a view of the southern side of the store, where there is landscaping work in progress.

Above is an early morning view of the site from the cliff top. This photo is looking at the back of the car park and the area where the petrol station will be. You can also see the roundabout which will eventually link the Tesco development with the residential area and Harbour road

A clearer view of the car park which has had some tarmac put down on it. Down the middle you can see spots that have been left out, which will probably be filled with bushes/plants, with roads in the car park running east to west in between them. The petrol station will be in the fenced of part in the background.

Above is a view of the south west corner of the store, where glass panels have already started to be fitted along the bottom, this process will probably happen fairly quickly on both sides of the store, with the southern side then being left to build.

Above is a side on view into the western side of the store, without the blue fence in the way. Behind the blue Britspace pod in the store, you can see one of the internal walls that have been installed.

Here is a clear view of the west side of the store, with the blue fence removed. The gaps in the wall along the building are being filled with glass panels, to allow more natural light into the building.

A view above of the tram lines heading into the station with the youth centre building sitting behind the fence posts waiting for it's fate. I will return to this spot in the coming months to take photos of the area as it is developed without the youth centre.

It seems the fence on the west side of the store is being taken down completely, giving people a clear view of the store. Here is one of the advertising boards that has been broken up and put the other side of the temporary fence.

This photo is of one of the doors at the front of the youth centre with the danger sign due to the asbestos in the building.

The photo above was taken early in the morning, looking at the store, but with the focus on one of the tramway hanging baskets, putting the construction work out of focus. Temporary lights are on inside the store to help the workmen see now most of the walls and roof are up.

----------------------------------------

Here is a view looking north of a busy car park, filled with asphalt lorries delivering loads so that the car park can be laid.

Above is a view of the eastern side of the store facing the car park, where side wall work is progressing well. The wooden sections are in place, like the opposite side and terra cotta panels have been placed between the wooden panels and the ground.

Another view of the youth centre building, but this time from a different place. The store is off to my right and the Underfleet is the other side of the building.

Above, is one of the guys sticking fence posts up around the youth centre building so that it can be taken down without affecting the tramway operations.

Although not very clear, you can make out in this photo the curbstones which will make up part of the road as it winds its way round the petrol station towards the store and the car park.

Another photo above looking straight into the south west side of the store looking east.

Above is a quick shot of one of the workmen inside the store fixing up what looks like a partition wall, possibly where the toilets etc will be positioned.

Here is a view of the side of the store which clearly shows how far it is off of the ground, you can see into the southwest corner of the store, with the britspace pods on the left. This part of the store will be filled with windows to allow lots of natural light to enter from the south.

I used the fence posts at the back of the store to frame this photo with the two guys on the cherry picker working on the side of the store in the middle.

Here is a view of the side of the store, with the wall panels in place and the empty areas ready to be filled with glass panels.

The photo above shows a tram passing the west side of the Tesco building, heading towards the youth centre in the background, where work is going to start on asbestos removal and then demolition.
-----------------------------------

The three photos above were taken on my iphone, while passing the site early in the evening, where work is starting on fencing up the area around the youth centre, temporarily exposing the south side of the Tesco site, allowing everyone to see exactly how far above ground level, the store is. Also you can see the sign in the door of the youth centre, which was to be expected, It will be interesting to see how quickly work can commence on demolition once all of the Asbestos has been removed from site.

------------------------------

Above is what will be one of the last photos of the youth centre before it is demolished, with work due to begin the day after this photo was taken. This will eventually form part of the pedestrian area leading to the store. It will be interesting with the age of the building to see if demolition is slowed by potential asbestos within the building.

Here is a view of one of the side sections of the store, that will have glass panels instead of walls and cladding, it is the south western corner of the store, with the southern overhanging canopy visible to the right of the photo.

Above is another view looking onto the site, where the access road goes north towards the roundabout in the background, which then leads you left round the petrol station and into the car park.

Above is another photo of the west side of the store with more work appearing of the walls and side cladding, most of the space left empty, will be filled with glass panels.

The photo above was taken on my iphone at 8am on September 1st as three lorries queued to get into the site with construction materials. These were followed by more lorries (concrete etc.) whilst I walked into town along the Underfleet, showing how busy the site gets, even at this time in the morning!

Another aerial view of the eastern side of the store at 7:45am with work progressing on the roof and the car park in the foreground almost ready for a tarmac layer.

Above is a view onto the site, looking at the area where the petrol station is being built, you can also see the roundabout and road that goes north of the petrol station and then round towards the store and the car park.

The photo above was taken at 8am as workmen were starting the day's work across the site, with more work on the roof structure of the store to continue. You can see here material on the roof waiting to be placed.
